In the heart of the countryside, Mas des Figues is a peaceful spot where you can unwind and forget about the stresses of daily life. If you want to leave the poolside and venture out, St Rémy de Provence is just 4km down the road, and the Alpilles countryside with Les Baux de Provence is practically on the doorstep.

At the Northern base of the Alpilles mountain range nestles St. Rémy, a Gallo-Roman town protected by a circular 14th century wall. Once home to Nostradamus and Vincent Van Gogh, it now plays host to visitors who come to admire its picturesque streets. There are many art galleries displaying pictures by local artists, little shops with Provençal goods and a vast choice of cafés and restaurants. Market days are frequent and provide more opportunities to sample the local produce and mingle with the locals whilst absorbing the relaxed atmosphere of the French lifestyle. During the summer months it is possible to hear organ recitals given on a magnificent organ in St. Rémy’s principal church located within the town walls.

Within walking distance, to the south of St. Rémy, is the Roman village of Glanum, now an archaeological site where the ruins of old monuments and residences can be explored. Also, nearby, atop a mountain ridge, lies the medieval village of Les-Baux-de-Provence with its stunning views of the Alpilles and its impressive chateau ruins definitely worth a visit.
